Is Ozone Safe for Drinking Water Tanks? The Science, Explained

Short answer: yes. Ozone (O₃) is a stronger disinfectant than chlorine, and unlike chlorine it decomposes back into ordinary oxygen within minutes of use, no chemical residue is left behind in the water. It's the same technology used in most bottled mineral water plants in India, applied here to the tank sitting on your roof or underground.

Why ozone is different from chlorine

Chlorine works by leaving a residual chemical in the water, that's literally how it keeps killing bacteria after treatment, and it's also why chlorinated water has a distinct smell and taste, and why some pathogens (like Cryptosporidium and Giardia) have evolved resistance to it. Ozone works differently: it's a highly reactive form of oxygen that ruptures bacterial and viral cell walls and oxidizes contaminants on contact, then breaks back down into oxygen (O₂), there's nothing left to linger in your water.

Ozone isn't just powerful, it's naturally occurring

Disinfecting strength is measured by oxidation potential, how aggressively a substance destroys microorganisms on contact. Ozone (≈2.07 V) sits well above chlorine dioxide, hypochlorous acid, and chlorine gas (≈1.36–1.57 V) on that scale, which is the scientific reason it kills faster and reaches organisms chlorine can't. It's also naturally occurring, ozone forms in the atmosphere when lightning or UV light splits oxygen molecules, which then recombine as O₃. The generators used in tank cleaning work on the same basic principle, using a controlled electrical discharge to produce ozone on demand rather than relying on a purely synthetic chemical process.

What the independent lab testing actually showed

Talk is cheap in this industry, most claims about "99.99% germ kill" are made without a report behind them. Ours isn't. An independent, NABL-accredited lab (Terra Environ Labs Pvt. Ltd., also ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified) ran a full before/after comparison across 22 physicochemical parameters on tanks treated with our process. The verdict: complete compliance with IS 10500:2012, the Indian drinking water standard, across all 22 tested parameters, with an average contaminant reduction of 82%.

Does ozone treatment make my tap water safe to drink?

This is the one distinction worth being precise about, and we'd rather you hear it from us than be surprised later: our process cleans and disinfects the tank itself and everything the water touches inside it. It does not certify the water arriving from the municipal supply, tanker, or borewell before it enters your tank. If your incoming source is contaminated, the tank being spotless doesn't fix that, though it does mean nothing is being added to the problem by the storage itself, which is a very common, avoidable source of contamination in Hyderabad specifically.
